All eyes are on Connor McDavid and the Erie Otters as they begin a new season with their annual training camp, which is taking place in Ancaster, Ont. due to renovations at Erie Insurance Arena.
McDavid, the first overall pick in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection by the Otters, is just the third player in Ontario Hockey League history to receive “exceptional player” status into the league. In just a few short days, McDavid has already impressed observers before he steps onto the ice for his first OHL game.
Scott Radley of The Hamilton Spectator on McDavid: “The kid is special. It may be a cliché, but it’s true. The first overall pick in the Ontario Hockey League draft has all the components that make up a great player. A really great player.”
Erie Times-News beat writer Victor Fernandes is in Ancaster covering training camp, and has been keeping fans up-to-date with the latest information. He viewed McDavid’s first scrimmage, in which McDavid scored on two of his first three shifts.
Victor has also provided instant coverage through Twitter. You can follow him here (@goeriehockey).
Canada’s largest national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, is working on a feature about McDavid for a future issue. Stay tuned for their story within a week.
First cuts from camp are expected Wednesday night.
